The AAHPM Next Gen Scholars for Equity in Hospice and Palliative Medicine Program is a fantastic opportunity for early-career individuals who are passionate about advancing hospice and palliative medicine. It is specifically designed for those who are historically marginalized and underrepresented in the field and want to make a difference. The program offers a transformative experience that focuses on leadership development, innovation, and deepening understanding in hospice and palliative care. Scholar candidates from historically marginalized groups will be given priority for this program. There are very few programs focused on improving representation within HPM, through direct mentorships. As the leading HPM organization for physicians, we feel a responsibility to provide leadership in filling this gap, helping increase diversity and inclusion in the HPM professional workforce and leadership and ensuring our field more closely represents the communities we serve.
How the Scholars Program Works
AAHPM will arrange a two-year sponsorship with a leader in the field for 8 scholars. Scholar applicants are paired with sponsors who have similar interests and practice locations. Both scholars and sponsors commit to a two-year relationship, communicating regularly to work on a scholarly project and career development. Goals for the program are decided together by the scholars and sponsors.
AAHPM will:
- Present an award to the scholar judged to have produced the most outstanding project
- Host quarterly Zoom meetings with all scholars and sponsors
- Provide organizational support and resources
