The ongoing pandemic will likely impact the upcoming fellowship recruitment season. As a community, HPM Fellowship Directors should seek creation of an equitable application process for fellowship applicants and programs for the health and safety of applicants, program faculty and staff, and patients. AAHPM has issued a statement recommending all programs conduct all fellowship interviews virtually, both for external and internal applicants.

AAHPM joined the AMA and state and specialty societies partners in sending a letter calling on HHS to waive the CMS requirement for budget neutrality in Medicare physician payments when it implements the E/M office visit coding and payment changes that were finalized for 2021.

In comments to CMS, AAHPM offered recommendations for telehealth policies that should be made permanent beyond the COVID-19  public health emergency. The Academy was also among the 300+ stakeholders that sent a letter urging congressional leaders to ensure CMS has the authority to continue expanded telehealth flexibilities once the PHE is rescinded.

AAHPM and specialty society partners weighed in on President Trump’s executive order instituting a ban on immigrants considered to pose a risk to the U.S. labor market following the COVID-19 outbreak. Joint letters from CMSS and the AMA/specialties urged the Administration to exempt health professionals and researchers from the order.

All milestones for Year 2 of AAHPM’s CMS measure development project have been reached; in addition we have submitted our Year 3 continuation of funding application. While survey fielding is paused due to the pandemic, we continue to focus on program engagement and are conducting preliminary analyses on data collected to date, including how programs have responded to COVID-19 using telehealth.

Congratulations to Lyle Fettig for being appointed as the new AAHPM Representative to the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Association of Specialty Professors (AAIM ASP) Council. We also offer congratulations to Solomon Liao, who previously served in this role, for his recent election to serve as the AAIM-ASP Council President-Elect.
