Jared Robenstein, MD Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital

AAHPM reached out to the 2024 Emerging Leaders to gain insight into what motivated them to pursue leadership positions and what they find more fulfilling in their experiences. Jared Robenstein, MD has been recognized as one of the exceptional individuals chosen as a 2024 AAHPM Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Care.

Who has most influenced your work and how have they shaped your contributions?
So, so many people! My parents for showing me how to lean into hard conversations and model palliative care principles before I knew what it was. Everyone in palliative care who came before me has paved the way for our field and taught me so much. Doctors like Kathryn Mannix, Ira Byock, and Harvey Chochinov for beautifully modeling how to have these conversations clearly and compassionately on a large scale. Comedians and satirists who show how to use humor to educate and enlighten. My boss Tammy Kang for always being such a strong support and sponsor, and for modeling kind, impactful leadership. My wife Leyat for always being my biggest support and our kids for reminding me of what matters most.

What is the significance to you of being recognized as a “Emerging Leader” in Hospice and Palliative Medicine?
It means the world to me! It validates all the time and effort I’ve spent trying to educate and empower in unconventional ways when I honestly wasn’t sure anyone was listening or noticing.

What is your aspiration for the evolution of hospice and Palliative Medicine?
I hope we continue to work toward fully embracing and celebrating the diversity in our field and striving for inclusiveness among our colleagues and the people we serve. I hope that we as a field can fully stand on the remarkable impact of our work and no longer feel like we need to justify our seat at the table.
