AAHPM reached out to the 2024 Emerging Leaders to gain insight into what motivated them to pursue leadership positions and what they find more fulfilling in their experiences. Elizabeth Dawn Trice Loggers, MD PhD FAAHPM has been recognized as one of the exceptional individuals chosen as a 2024 AAHPM Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Care.
Who has most influenced your work and how have they shaped your contributions?
My patients and the important people in their lives have had the greatest influence on my career in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Those interactions have shaped my clinical, teaching and research interests and forged my commitment to the field.
What is the significance to you of being recognized as a “Emerging Leader” in Hospice and Palliative Medicine?
It is an incredible honor to be recognized as an Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. To be seen by the Academy and to stand with the pioneers and leaders of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is an acknowledgement that I will cherish. And, at the same time, I appreciate that I could not be named for this award without the love of my family and friends, the support of our amazing palliative care clinical team, the thoughtfulness of our Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows, and the commitment to Hospice and Palliative Medicine of my colleagues and institutions, Fred Hutch Cancer Center and University of Washington.
What is your aspiration for the evolution of hospice and Palliative Medicine?
My aspiration for Hospice and Palliative Medicine is that this field continues to be an ever-stronger agent for positive change in the structure and delivery of healthcare. I hope Hospice and Palliative Medicine can move us closer as a society to recognizing healthcare as a right — and toward demanding clear, compassionate communication as fundamental to that right. I thank the leaders of Hospice and Palliative Medicine for their enduring support for subspecialist training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and look forward to participating in educating the next generation of leaders who will join us in bending the arc of healthcare toward justice.
