The AAHPM Board of Directors met to approve several items, including: 2 new forums (Chronic Respiratory Disease and Safe Use of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies), FY18 audit, Q1 2019 investment report and March and April financial reports. They also discussed the upcoming strategic planning process, where all members and leaders will have the opportunity to offer input into the Academy’s future.

The State of the Science in Hospice and Palliative Care now has 10 supporting partners including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Social Work in Hospice and Palliative Care Network. The program schedule for this inaugural research symposium has been finalized and we have opened scholarship opportunities for those interested. Applications are due August 19.
Abstracts for the 2019 Supportive Care in Oncology Symposium (October 25-26 in San Francisco) are now being accepted. This redesigned conference will bridge the gap between important scientific updates and practical applications to transform palliative and supportive care in oncology. Submission deadline: July 9; hotel reservation and early registration deadline: September 18.
Guided by the Public Policy Committee, Quality Committee and Hospice Medicine Council, AAHPM submitted comments on CMS’s FY 2020 hospice proposed rule. The Academy opposed proposals to rebase certain payment rates and require an addendum to the election statement, shared concerns about testing a hospice “carve in” under MA, and offered recommendations for presenting CAHPS data on the Hospice Compare website.
AAHPM leaders Susan Nelson, Kim Curseen and Paul Tatum (shown below) joined the June 20 Patient Quality of Life Coalition Lobby Day on Capitol Hill to promote the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act.
