Week in Review: June 7-11, 2021

The Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (JPSM) is providing 50 days of free access to the article: The Serious Illness Population: Ascertainment via Electronic Health Record or Claims Data. This new published article showcases the work of Laura Hanson, Amy Kelley, and Christine Ritchie, with AARP, OptumLabs, and AMGA. Must access or download before July 25, 2021.

Abstracts for the 2022 Annual Assembly will be open June 21 – July 14, 2021. Submissions for this call with include concurrent sessions and scientific and quality improvement papers and posters. Each completed abstract submission for open calls will be assessed a $30 fee to help offset the rising costs of technology. Visit AnnualAssembly.org for submission information for each call.

AAHPM submitted comments on CMS’s annual proposed rule addressing hospice payment and quality reporting. The Academy offered feedback on a range of topics, including to insist new spending/utilization patterns reflect a changing hospice population, express concerns with CMS’s proposal to implement and publicly report a new Hospice Care Index measure, and weigh in on plans to collect data on SDOH. AAHPM also contributed to a letter submitted by the NCHPC.

CMO Joe Rotella represented AAHPM in panel discussion of care coordination held during the PTAC public meeting. The session focused on optimizing outcomes for patients and transforming value-based care in the context of APMs. The Academy was invited to participate as a past submitter of a payment model proposal. AAHPM is a sponsor of the NASEM Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness, which held the first webinar of a two-day virtual workshop on “Integrating Serious Illness Care into Primary Care Delivery.” Co-planned by AAHPM’s rep Phil Rodgers, the presentations also featured Academy leaders Martha Twaddle and Gregg VandeKieft.
