AAHPM Week in Review: December 17-21

The FDA named AAHPM Past President Amy Abernethy Principal Deputy Commissioner for Food and Drugs, overseeing offices that regulate drugs, medical devices, tobacco and food. She commented, “I had always thought I would go into government service and I have always believed that one of the ways you make change is through policy and regulation. It’s a chance to spend 100% of my time solving problems that are important for human health.”

End Game, a moving film about the passage from life to death, was one of 10 films to advance in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 91st Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards. Congratulations to AAHPM members BJ Miller and Steve Pantilat who worked on the film. The ceremony will be held Sunday, February 24, 2019.

AAHPM worked with the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care to transmit a letter to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation offering joint recommendations for design of a serious illness alternative payment model. The letter reflects key priorities for the field with regard to patient eligibility, participating providers, care model, payment and quality, and was signed by stakeholder supporters.

Happy Holidays to you and your families. The AAHPM office will be closed December 24-25 and January 1 for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The Week in Review will take a break over the holidays, but will return on January 11.
